We left Townsville 6.45am Saturday and arrived in Cairns at noon. The trip up was picturesque, green, lush and oh-so-tropical, but with a twist - it was bordering on chilly which is unusual for the far north tropics. It showered on and off which was kind of nice as well. I took hundreds of photos but more than half are either fuzzy due to travel blur or, blurry due to 'shake'. And many of the perfect shots are totally uninteresting! Hence, why I am not and never will be the world famous photographer I see in my dream-state.
Travelling north to Cairns we kept to the coastal highway, with the return trip on Monday being via the glorious Atherton Tablelands.
We got that 'room with a view' but no sunshine!
Coming home via the Atherton Tablelands - beautiful farms abound up here.
and the jungle meets the road in many sections....
..... beautiful rainforest trees at every turn
Catch one of these in the many lakes Jim!
With many towns on the t'lands averaging an elevation between 600-920 metres I could easily live up here!
One would need a week up here to fully explore all of the t'lands natural wonders - pristine creeks, rivers, waterfalls and deep volcanic lakes. And not to mention the quaint little villages.
HAPPY BLOGGING
I am now looking forward to paying everyone a visit and catching up on your posts!

Oh yeah! I could do with some fishing! Some other blogger from Darwin was saying how nippy it was getting there too. In the high 20s, I think she said. Hahaha!
ReplyDeleteAre you going to tell us what you bought on your shopping trip?
G'day Typist, high 20's indeed! Haha. Must be chilly your way but back in the Hunter in my area its going down to 6 at night! Now we can honestly claim that is chilly.
DeleteWhat did we buy.... well in all honesty it was a little disappointing, the young'uns were hoping to score a "real" swanky evening frock each but bummed out. No luck. So of course we stocked up on home wares, nice underwear and some clothes (of course) and a bag here and there (of course)and we tried (very hard) to win our purchase money back at the casino (not quite, of course) ;) "hooroo" Typist.
6! My god! We get that sometimes, but not so far. I think the older I get, the more I long for balmy nights.
DeleteIs Cairns big enough for swanky evening frocks? I've never been there. Maybe try online. You get a lot of good and reasonably priced stuff there these days. I hardly buy anything new anymore. My weight is like a yoyo so I make do with fleamarket fat dresses and always buy everything one size too big. Sigh. How did I get this way?
Good night! Almost time for Game of Thrones so off for a shower now. HUGS x
Mmm, online now there's a thought.....I'll pass that on.
Delete(chuckle to the rest) night-night Typist. xx
Hi Rose, you look like your having a great vacation. Love the pictures, it is so green there, we are dry here so I appreciate all the green. Love it.
ReplyDeleteAw Jana, hope you get some rain very soon. Actually north is usually a little drier at this time of year but the rains have come regularly. But the tablelands are usually greener.
DeleteWhat beautiful country..Just LOVE those majestic trees--almost looks like your driving through a tunnel of trees..What a super motorcycle ride that would be!! Looks like you were up a few floors--Is the beach crowded in the summer?? Wow what a person could do if they didn't have to work (Hey?)
ReplyDeleteP.S.I sometimes use fish that size for bait,,,
Hi Jim, I could give Cairns a miss from now on, but, the Atherton Tablelands is another thing - it is glorious up there, the lakes remind me of a prehistoric time - deep volcanic lakes surrounded by rainforest. Stunning.
DeleteHahahaha Jim, ....bait indeed! :) I bet you've got a story about 'the one that got away too' :))
Hi Rose, Your pictures are GREAT. That looks like a great place.. I could live there too!!!!!!! Sorry you had rain and cool weather ---but to me, that's not all bad!!!! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Betsy
Hi Betsy, we had time constraints on us, but I would have loved to have gotten some waterfall photos for you!! They are beautiful up there.
DeleteWell Rose, I think you are a great photographer and you have some gorgeous scenery in your part of the world.
ReplyDeleteThanks Denise! the drive up and back was simply enchanting.
DeleteLove the header photo. All the pictures are beautiful, like Jana said we are in a drought so everything is browning up fast for Oklahoma. We are still usually Ok in May but not this year. Great post!
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed Cheri, and I'll pray for rain for you. Here in Oz we understand and empathise only too well where drought is concerned :( sounds like you could be in for one heck of a summer. May the rains tumble down.
DeleteThat first shot has a great dramatic sky! Hope you are still enjoying your time with family. I've started a new job and haven't been able to post and comment very regularly, but I hope that's going to change soon! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Halcyon, I love the header photo too, but funny thing is that in reality it was much much clearer. (Must blame my little S.S.) Am still having a wonderful time! Oh my I'll have to catch up properly - I'm wondering if the new job was the one you applied for several weeks back!? Regardless, congrats! :)
DeleteOh the views are wonderful! Makes me want to go on a tropical trip. Guess I'll have to live it through your pictures....
ReplyDeleteOoh Mamma, I should have put more pics up for you!! :)
DeleteDon't sell yourself short, you're pics are great Rose! I love 'em! Australia is the only country I have cared to leave the U.S. too see, and you are making me want to do it even more! lol
ReplyDeleteThanks Kevin! well there's always a guest room ready at my place! You'd have to remember to drive on the "correct" side of the road here though!! ;)
DeleteI am glad you enjoyed your trip despite a lack of sunshine during some of it. It's all in the heart!
ReplyDeleteThank you Rose and yes, that is so true!
DeleteHahahahaha! I have just found your bloggie through Georgia Little Pea and see that she commented on this post too. I'd be the 'some other blogger from Darwin'! And it IS cold. Really it is. Honestly. What a great blog you have. I see you are travelling up in one of my other favourite parts of the country - love it over there. Try the Burgh Inn in Yungaburra for a surprisingly fab meal! :) Look forward to checking in again.
ReplyDeleteHaha, greetings H and Flo, I"ll be dashing across to your place to visit soon - glad you called by here! Now come on, Darwin cold?? truly really?? I'll be sure to remember your Yungaburra tip. Catch you soon. (PS isn't Georgia and typist something? just love 'em)
Deleteah....traveling about must be so relaxing and fun. I hope you are enjoying every second of it, Rose!
ReplyDeleteThanks Kitty! it is fun (maturity has its benefits, one gets to ride in front ALL the time! :))
DeleteA friend of mine has a daughter who lives in Cairns. I met her once. A tropical paradise she described it.
ReplyDeleteMaybe I could get from Tasmania to Cairns.
Lovely post and lovely comment replies Rose
Good to see you Jim, hoping you are well - of course you can get from Tas to Cairns and then catch a tour from there to the Tablelands. :)
DeleteWith only having a small and wonderful bunch of people visiting my blog it enables me to enjoy a personal response and dialogue with everyone, just love that.
Hi Rose. How beautiful and I'm sure you had a great time.
ReplyDeleteThanks for popping in to see me.

The landscape in your pictures is amazing. I think that it would be nice to drive through Australia some day.
I hope you'll have a great time. Have fun and take care!!
And please, blog! ;-)
Gald you are enjoying Gert Jan - if your knee is up to it perhaps you could CYCLE your way around Oz, now there's a thought. (A campervan with bicycles strapped to the back.) ;)
DeleteAh what lovely wide open spaces, that's the feeling I get from your photos and it's a hard one to achieve. So don't knock your own photography ! :)
ReplyDeleteOK Jenny - no more knocking! :)
