The drive north took 4 hours from home to there with 2 pit stops. I stayed in a cabin which backed on to the Malanda Falls and down a flight of stairs each morning I sat by the falls with my morning coffee.
Once at the top of the Tablelands, it's a 20 minute drive between all of the attractions and little towns and villages. I chose a lot of secondary roads and saw so much more of the amazing countryside. I passed dairy farms and visited tea plantations.
In the early morning I drove down rainforest lined roads, let the car windows down, drove slowly and listened to the sounds of the rainforest.
Marvelling at the volcanic crater lakes I dipped my toes in and took far too many photos. On one particular day, I scared myself silly when caught in a rain storm whilst negotiating a winding mountainous road with almost zero visibility and nowhere to pull over.
Strolling around preserved historical villages and quaint little towns I realised how much simpler and laid back life was up here.
I drove up winding roads to 'look outs' and was awestruck by the vistas.
The visits to cheese and chocolate factories did little for my waist line, but what fun supporting the industry! The smell of the farms with their ploughed paddocks and cattle and dairy cows assaulted my senses in the nicest possible way.
I enjoyed rainforest treks in the many conservation parks and during one such walk I realised I was completely alone and for a moment I felt like I was in the Lost World. I spotted a Tree Kangaroo so far in the treetops he was hardly visible but I managed to zoom in and get a reasonable shot.
Day 5 it was time to head home.
HAPPY BLOGGING

Thanks for another tour of part of your wonderful country, I never tire of seeing where 'the other half lives'. That tree Kangaroo was interesting, I didn't realize there was such a thing.

Oh Rose, This is MY type of post... I LOVE it... That area is absolutely awesome--and one I would truly love to see. The waterfall is gorgeous --and that rain forest must have been tremendous.. WOW---and the views... Terrific.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing--and I'm so glad you went and had such a great time.
Hugs,
Betsy
I don't know how you couldn't have taken "far too many photos"! What a beautiful place . . . and how nice, for a little time, to find yourself alone in that peaceful place.
ReplyDeleteSupporting the industry, I do like that interpretation Rose. No doubt your efforts have kept the industry afloat ! A wonderful post Rose, with amazing photos. With digital cameras you can never take too many photos.
ReplyDeleteMade me wish I were along on the travels!
ReplyDeleteFabulous post Rose, I'm green with envy. I'm supposed to visit some folks in Cairns sometime, I really should get planning.
ReplyDeleteUntil I read your post I had no idea there was such an animal as a tree kangaroo !
The rolling mist is great, reminds me of a day not too long ago when I sat on a hilltop to watch the mist rolling in from the sea.
Have a great week.
How wonderful for you to go on that trip, it looks so beautiful and wild, I long for that feeling alone in a wild place like that, so glad u could experience it. Great place to click away too, I'm sure you have many more pictures up your sleeve?
ReplyDeleteFancy being able to look up and see a bear type animal just hanging out I the canopy, that's just crazy in my mind. Hopefully one day I might get to experience that for myself. Sigh.
Well, my dear I'm sure you had a big welcome home from your family, hope all is well.
Big warm wishes

These are the most beautiful photos I've ever seen of Australia. I think I have to come to visit!
ReplyDeleteWow, I can almost smell the ancient scents of the rain forests and feel the coolness of it all. Thank you for sharing this trip of yours.

What beautiful scenery! Everything is so green!!! :)
ReplyDeleteOh Rose! Thank you for taking us with you on holiday!!! Someday... someday to visit.
ReplyDeleteThat has got to be one of the best trips ever and you didn't even have to catch a plane...oh hang on that's moi :)) i almost turned green at the thought of your early morning coffee by the waterfall, bliss! I'm in the middle of kitchen renovations and believe me I would rather have been where you were for the last five days :)
ReplyDeleteMarvelous photos Rose, I have done my own arm-chair traveling this morning. Thank you for your ever so sweet comments on my own travels around the U.S. I would love to visit Australia one day. You show it for the beautiful country that it is. Have a great week :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous vacation - the landscapes are marvelous. Is that a wild turkey sharing the falls with you? Within 4 hours, you're in a totally different ecosystem. Glad you're well and enjoying yourself.
ReplyDeleteYes Barb, it is a bush turkey - they are everywhere and if ever there is an unattractive bird he is it!
DeleteIt is often said that once you reach one hour's drive north of here it is honestly like a line has been drawn across the country and it just gets better and better the further north you go.
It may be a while before I can show some reno shots Rose, I forgot how frustrating it is and how hard it is to get tradesmen to turn up :)
ReplyDeleteAha, the old tradesmen not turning up huh?! Well, I'll eagerly await the end result!

wow, how gorgeous the vista is!! and there seems to be no one around, except the kangaroo?
ReplyDeleteI envy your peaceful trip, Rose. You are lucky!!
Hi Rose, back again to let you know we saw one small fire when we were out the first day but nothing since, and none since on our daily trips. We have, however, seen the effects of years past, with new growth taking their place. I think it must be a slow process to recover from. We have been here five days and will be heading north tomorrow. Thank you for your concern and wishing you a great day :)
ReplyDeleteOh that looks like such a magical place! Though I had to do a double take on the truck picture, he's driving on the wrong side of the road ;o)
ReplyDeleteWow! This is so pretty. And also how I imagine Aussie must look like. Please give us more of this ;-)
ReplyDeleteGreetings from the Netherlands,

Don't ask me why, but I want to tug at that monkey's tail and tip it out of the tree.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pics Rose! Australia is the only country I care to leave the U.S. to visit. Hopefully I will one of these days!
ReplyDeleteOh, what a fab place! how lucky you are to be within a few hours drive. I loved the photos, but I think best of all was the idea of having morning coffee by that waterfall.... mmm.... something to think about as the nights start to draw in here in England....
ReplyDeleteA TREE KANGAROO!
ReplyDeleteI'm still catching up on your posts and will write a proper comment later but A TREE KANGAROO! I am SO envious. I was just thinking about tree kangaroos yesterday and wishing we had them here... really I was!
H
